What To Expect | Portland, OR Photography

I can picture it. You are scrolling through a bunch of photographer websites. Looking at the beautiful people you see in their portfolios. You might be wondering what it’s like to do a beauty shoot. You might be feeling too nervous to get in front of a camera. You might be wondering if the camera will be nice to you. Or you might even wonder if you are too plain, too gray, too wrinkled, or too in need of loosing a few pounds. You might also be wondering if the experience is worth the investment. Believe me. I get it. Go ahead and grab your cup of coffee (or my favorite, pumpkin chai) and let’s just chat about these things for a bit. I can tell you right now – None of the reasons I listed above come close to being a reason not to treat yourself to the amazing experience a photo shoot can be. Before we chat, go ahead and watch this video that shows you, better than I can explain with words, what it’s like to do a shoot in my studio.

What if I’m not good at doing makeup?

That’s an easy one! All of my shoots include professional hair and makeup by my talented hair and makeup artist. All you have to do is show up with a clean face and hair and let her do her magic.

What if I don’t know what to wear?

We can chat about what kind of look you want and I can help with suggestions. I also have a closet packed full of shoot wardrobe in my studio and if you want to, we can work with what I have!

What if I feel too “blah” to have my photos taken?

Oh, Covid-19, what are you doing to us? Some days I don’t even get out of my pajamas, if I’m being honest. I’m a Mom of two littles and keeping them fed and (mostly) happy is sometimes all I can muster, let alone mascara and lipstick. Trust me, though. Once you get in the makeup chair and spin around to see how amazing you look in the mirror, you won’t be feeling blah, that’s for sure!

before and after portrait

What if I need to loose a few pounds?

Ah yes… I have quite a bit more than a “few” pounds to loose and I’ve been saying that I need to loose them for quite some time. But if you keep putting off your shoot for the “perfect time” to do a shoot, you’ll likely never do it. Life can get in the way. Just do it! Plus, with angles and posing, I can easily take off 20 pounds as far as the camera is concerned. Then, when you do loose the weight, you can come back for a celebratory shoot and use the two to see how far you’ve come!

I hope you can see that a shoot with me is more than having your photos taken. It’s an amazing experience that can help you change the way you see yourself. Please shoot me an email and we can chat about your shoot!

Pageant Head Shots | Oregon United Miss

Pageant head shot

Miss Abby has been competing in beauty pageants since she was 9 years old. She has won several titles, including Salem United Miss, Oregon United Miss, National United Miss, IJM Miss Oregon Jr. Teen, and American US National Jr. Teen Queen. I had the pleasure of photographing her pageant head shots for her next competition. Abby has come in a number of times for updated portraits and I just love her poise and confidence.

Pageant head shot

When competing for Oregon United Miss, the pageant head shot photo she submitted, taken by yours truly, won the photogenic competition. I was so pleased to be part of that achievement!

Feel Inferior? | Beauty Photography Portland Oregon

Beauty Photography Portland Oregon

I just love this quote! It’s easy to get swept up in the emotions of how we think others are making us feel, but sometimes I have to remind myself that how I feel is my own choice! I have a comical conversation with another local photographer etched in to my memory. It’s only comical because I didn’t let his insults get me down. He asked me a bunch of questions about how I learned photography and about my studio and was completely unimpressed with my answers. Then he went on about how his father was a photographer before him and so was his grandfather. His great grandfather was a painter. So he has generations of artistic ability that he could claim. When I told him that my father was a city bus driver, I could almost see the disdain coming out of his ears like a green colored visible stench in a cartoon.  I could have allowed this converstation to affect how I saw myself as a professional photographer. But instead I took a good look at my gorgeous studio and felt proud of the business I’ve built  and the strides I’ve made in my art, all on my own. I absolutely love what I do and I’m pretty darn good at it, too, if I do say so myself.

Today I challenge you to tell yourself the opposite of any negative thought or emotion you may have. I want to hear about how it goes! I think you may be surprised at the outcome.

V Family | Beauty Portraits Portland Oregon

Those of you who have followed my work for even a short time know that family photography isn’t my specialty. Especially when it comes to babies. Hand me a baby and I will look at you like a dear in the headlights. Although, I’ll be getting over that soon since I’m expecting my own “bundle of joy” in April.   But when the V Family asked me if I was interested in doing a glam session that included their baby, that was a lot more up my allie than the typical newborn shoot that involves proping up babies in adorable props and hats. So I accepted and I’m glad I did because the shoot went great and I love the photos.

Here is what Mrs. V said about her experience.  “I loved my photo shoot with Rayleigh!!! I did a family session with my husband and our 8-month-old baby, and I also sneaked in a couple boudoir pictures, which I’m saving as a surprise for my husband for St. Valentine! I was impressed by how precisely Rayleigh and her make-up and hair professional captured the style of the session that I wanted. I wanted a family and baby photo shoot, but more on the glam side. My makeup and hair turned out impeccable, and the pictures are amazing! I got lots of compliments from my friends and family, and lots of them were asking where I found this level of photography! I have a lot of friends outside of America who do professional photography themselves, and they also mentioned very high quality of the photo shoot. I also loved the process! Rayleigh made it all so easy and enjoyable! I felt confident and beautiful, my husband (who is not a big fan of photo shoots to begin with) was very comfortable and relaxed, my baby was calm and happy. I definitely attribute all that to the wonderful atmosphere Rayleigh creates for her shoots. It was an amazing experience!”

False Eyelashes | Beauty & Boudoir Photography Portland Oregon

TIP TO PREPARE FOR YOUR BOUDOIR PHOTO SHOOT – WEAR FALSE EYELASHES

boudoir photography portland oregon

They make look fake in real life and when you first put them on they feel so heavy and just, well weird! However, in your photos they will make a HUGE difference. You actually don’t really notice them in the pictures, but you will notice their effect. They accentuate your eyes and give them a gorgeous almond shape. These are a must-have!

At the Photography by Rayleigh studio, my hair and makeup artist will provide false lashes for your shoot, so you don’t have to worry about bringing your own. But aside from your shoot, if you want to wear them for an event or just to feel a little extra pretty, check out this site for some great tips on everything false lashes. There are also some tips on making your own lashes appear longer.

Sisters | Beauty Photography Portland Oregon

Glamour Photography Portland Oregon

One of the most beautiful bonds in the world is the bond between sisters. When I was growing up, my sister and I used to fight constantly. I didn’t want her in my room or touching my stuff. But as an adult I can’t imagine life without my sister. We talk on the phone almost every day and she’s my very best friend. It’s been way too long since my sister and I have done a photo shoot together so we should totally get on that! Sister’s shoots are so much fun and create the most amazing keepsake. They make a great Mother’s Day gift, too.  Ooh, I just gave myself a great idea for a gift for my Mom this spring. Haha!

Exist in Memories | Photography Portland Oregon

Have you ever stopped to think about just how long you’ve been on this earth? About how many days you’ve lived….how many sentences you’ve spoken….how many things you’ve really seen??

It’s nearly impossible for almost all of us to remember everything we’ve ever looked at or read (unless you’re really cool and have that neat memory trick, which, I totally don’t), or every family member you have…or had. Every Holiday dinner, every birthday morning, every family vacation, every time you cut a class in high school and went to the beach or behind the Taco Bell with your friends.

exist in photographs

There’s so much that we’ve lived through that we’ll never remember, because we don’t have images of them. The memories that we DO have, we have because they left an imprint on us, whether it was good or bad, it was a strong enough moment visually, emotionally, physically…that it left a mark in our minds that is easy for us to access either whenever we’d like, or, when something sparks up a related memory of that time, like a certain smell or a song.  But can you imagine how much we would remember if we just stopped to take a few pictures along the way?

I feel so blessed that my Mom was very much in to pictures of my sister and me when we were growing up so I have albums full of photos to look back on. But do you know how many of the photos include her? Hardly any of them. Mostly because she was the one always taking the photos. I would love to look at a bunch of photos of what my Mom and Dad both looked like in the early 80’s as I was growing up or in the 70’s before I was born. Maybe some photos of them together when they were dating.  I totally get it, though. I find it difficult to allow myself to be in photos because I never like the way I look in snapshot photos and I’d rather just have photos of all my friends. Plus, I just feel so comfortable being the one to take the photos. But one day when I have children and they want to look at all my old albums, they won’t care about seeing photos of my friends. They want to see me. They won’t care if I was having a bad hair day or if I needed to lose weight. So I do my best to just exist in photos and to quiet the voices in my head that tell me that I’m not pretty enough to be seen. To be remembered. I want to leave an imprint on this world and a memory for my family members to look back on with love.

So take some time to have your photos taken. WITH your family. WITH your friends. Take some selfies! We have the ability to catch these memories now. To preserve them. There’s no reason not to. Nobody who loves you will care if you are too skinny or too big or balding or not tan enough. The only thing that will matter to them when you are gone, is that they can look back and laugh and cry and ultimately remember you and how wonderful your time together was.
